After 15 years in this house battling with the pathetic kitchen to get each meal prepared (and that's over 10,000 meals, estimating conservatively) we finally tackled the big kitchen remodeling project this summer. Did it take longer than projected? Yes (9 weeks instead of 4). Did it go over budget? Yes (enough said). Did it everything come out perfectly? No (someone forgot to double-check something, but at least the cabinets were 6" too short instead of too long, so we just lived with it). Was it all worth it? Absolutely.
We have been enjoying the new kitchen since about the second week of September 2004. So it was with more than a small amount of panic that I heard B's voice from the basement last night saying "there's water down here and it's coming through the kitchen floor." Sometime in the last few weeks or so, the water line to the ice maker in the refrigerator sprung a slow leak that was invisible until it had soaked through the floor. We must have checked that thing a hundred times in the first few months after it was installed, and it was fine, so of course we stopped checking. Damn.
B made some calls this morning, and we have entered the three-ring circus between us, our insurance company, and our remodeling contractor (who hooked up the connection). Who knows where this one will end up.... stay tuned.
Meanwhile, a very happy birthday to my daughter who officially turned six this evening. Birthday celebrations were somewhat diminished by the three industrial fans now running inside our house, and the fact that this was her first day back at school after a two-day bout with the stomach flu and her brother followed her lead by coming down with it today. But she greatly enjoyed opening her gifts, and we'll have a party for her friends when everything settles down (the big Apple Blossom festival is going on in town this weekend, too).
