Over Memorial Day weekend we got to spend some time at the beach on Puget Sound. We drove over Friday afternoon on an unusually hot day and got to the beach just before sunset. There is nothing like looking out at the water as the light is reflected on it. After a few deep breaths I even stopped being annoyed at the fact that I missed actually seeing the sun set because a certain six-year-old urgently had to go to the bathroom (which was 50 yards down the beach) at exactly the wrong time.
It wasn't as hot, but we went back on Monday morning because the kids were asking to play in the sand some more. It was fun to watch them experiment and figure out some of the same things I learned as a kid during many days at the beach:
- no matter how many buckets of water you carry, your moat never gets filled
- as soon as you get your castle constructed, some little kid will come along with a stick and you just know he's going to give it a whack as soon as your back is turned
- dribbling wet sand out of your hand is just as fun as molding the sand in buckets
- no matter how hard you are trying not to, you will get your clothes wet
- you cannot get wet sand off your skin
- it is best to make sure the sand is cleaned out from between your toes before you put your socks back on
- partly-dried-out seaweed is stinky
- you can actually create something cooperatively with your sibling, and even enjoy the process
